Middlecott Sketchbattle Experiment Detroit 2018!
Mike was invited to the 2018 Middlecott Sketchbattle Experiment Detroit 2018 event and I went with him!
At first I wasn't excited to go. It's 100 miles away for me and I thought "why would I want to drive all that way on a week night to watch some people draw cars?"
I was wrong, well I was kind of right because it was a bunch of people sketching cars, but it was definitely worth the drive!
This is the 4th year of the Middlecott Sketchbattle experiment. Middlecott describes this as a "Fight Club of Design" and it really does have the vibe! When you walk in, it feels like a Fight Club music video.
There was a very entertaining MC all painted up and dressed in white that kept the energy pumping. The contest was in timed stages where the artists would get 25 minutes to sketch a concept car with certain criteria (colors or themes).
The artists were not just given 25 minutes to go off in quiet corner to sketch, oh no...the music was cranked up and the MC was even crawling on the tables as they sketched and added color to their designs. Camera flashes were going off and spectators were so close to the artists that they were probably bumping the artists elbows.
The evening was much more fun than I had expected and set the bar for sketching in my opinion. So if a Middlecott Sketchbattle comes to your town then you should take the time to go and check it out! I'm looking forward to next year!
